Asura the Jet-Black ((しっ)(こく)のアスラ Shikkoku no Asura),[1] also called King of Magic Stones, Asura (()(せき)(おう)アスラ Maseki-Ō Asura),[2][3] was one of the Demon World's Four Demon Kings, who allied with Lucia Raregroove as part of Demon Card's Project DR.[4][1]

Appearance[]

In his base form, Asura was by far the smallest Demon King, barely coming up to a normal human's waist in height. He appeared as a purple-skinned, imp-like humanoid with an emaciated body frame; his overlong arms and hands (the latter reaching nearly to the ground and bearing long, pointed, black fingernails) were especially thin, almost skeletal. His eyes were large with pale-yellow sclerae that were parent to tiny, dark irises (which tended to deviate outward). His facial skin featured scales of sort, and from the sides of his head (in place of human ears) grew two webbed, fin-like protrusions. The lower, obscured half of Asura's face seemed to include a thin, flat nose. Finally, the Demon King's skinny legs ended in dark, uncleft hooves.[5][1][6]

Asura's lower face was kept hidden from sight by a green mouth veil that hung below his chest, embroidered with a red emblem that included several vane-like and two comma shapes; the veil's bottom was hemmed with a yellowish-brown thread fringe. The Demon King's upper wear, consisting of at least three overlapping, pale-brown, and sleeveless cloth layers, bore the same fringes and, around the neck, included a large, fan-shaped, Medici-like collar that came up dramatically behind Asura's head, was green in color, and had a hemline of segmented gold rectangles, flanked by a line of flower motifs in a different shade of green. Otherwise, Asura donned a dark metal bangle on each wrist and a pair of black, baggy pants cut off below the knees. The most distinguishing piece of the King's outfit was arguably his headgear: resembling an oversized, two-coned jester's hat that was alternately colored green and yellow, with each cone drooping to the side and ending with a long tassel; topping Asura's forehead was the hat's gray metal hem that came with a dark pearl in the front middle, above Asura's glabella, plus a series of rounded, upwards triangles above, each bearing a single black, uniquely shaped motif.[5][1][6]

Personality[]

Asura was mostly reticent in his initial, smaller form and inclined to not properly speak unless calling out the names of his Dark Brings upon their activation. Otherwise he would, at most, mutter unintelligible sounds in response to his surroundings or being spoken to: usually "homu/hoshi" (ホム/ホシ).[1][7][8][9]

Asura became more talkative when roused to anger by Haru Glory, prompting the Demon King to call the boy an "eyesore" as he entered his enlarged demon form: while in such state, he voiced his assent to Lucia's goals of returning to a "real world" and reintroducing humankind to it, declaring that to be the captive Elie's sole and destined purpose as Lucia's "Bride of Darkness".[10] As he battled Haru, Asura expressed pride in his mastery over every existing Dark Bring, believing them to make him unassailable by the Rave Master and his body to be indestructible; he went on to mock Haru while brutalizing him, indicating his cruelty. When ultimately shattered apart by the Holy Sword Ravelt, Asura expressed shock at such a thing being possible before bemoaning his inability to see anything but darkness upon dying.[11][12]

Synopsis[]

Star Vestige arc[]

Asura was first mentioned during a meeting between Shuda and Sieghart Caeser at the Imperial HQ, with the two discussing the Project DR ("Dark Rendezvous") enacted by Demon Card to ally itself with several other forces of darkness, among which were the Demon World's Four Demon Kings. Asura in particular was mentioned to have passed on his own piece of Sinclair to Lucia (now in possession of four pieces).[4]

The Final Battle arc[]

Asura made his debut alongside the other three Demon Kings when summoned forth by Lucia from within Endless in its completed Dark Bring form, in preparation for the looming final battle against the Rave Warriors. Asura was sent to the northeastern Country of Arumdaun where he watched from the sidelines, sitting in his litter, as his army of golem soldiers raided the royal capital, easily overwhelming the defenders.[1]

Asura creating explosions

Asura attacking the Rave Warriors on their airship.

Later when the Rave Warriors within their airship approached the distorted dark dimension created by Lucia, Asura's army of golems (revealed to be called Dead Bringers) emerged out of the massive black sphere and attacked them,[13] consequently being repelled by the concerted efforts of the enemy group and their assembled allies.[14] Within the dark space, the Four Demon Kings alongside Lucia were awaiting the Rave Warriors, with Asura being the first sent into action by the Demon Card leader: under Lucia's order to go forth and shroud the heroes' light in darkness, he rapidly flew towards the opponents' airship, ramming it and breaching into the cockpit before proceeding to push the pilot, Hamrio Musica, off the ship using the Dark Bring Giant. The Demon King then relocated to the main bridge, appearing before the other Rave Warriors with Through the Wall. Shuda and Belnika's subsequent attacks failed to hurt Asura, and after dodging a sword slash from Haru, Asura engulfed most of the present foes in explosions using Balletteuse Flare, then blowing the airship to pieces using Zero Stream and causing the craft to fall to the ground within the dark dimension. As the dust on the wreckage settled, Asura was seen behind Elie, promptly imprisoning her inside a Dark Bring using his Enclaim technique before flying away with the kidnapped girl, intending to bring her to Lucia.[6]

Haru was quick to run after Asura, accelerating his pursuit with Silfarion. Upon catching up to the flying Demon King, Asura utilized the Dark Bring Gate to summon forth his fellow King Uta in midair, the latter stopping Haru in his tracks by plunging down his massive sword. The Rave Master, however, was able to resume his chase shortly thanks to Musica and Let Dahaka stepping in to take Uta on.[15]

Asura attacking Haru

Asura fighting Haru.

While Asura's Dead Bringers were still flying out en masse to fight the Rave Warriors' allies in the outside Human World,[16] Asura himself continued flying away from Haru within Lucia's dark space. The Rave Master finally managed to catch up using Mel Force to push himself off the ground and towards the Demon King, consequently striking him down with his Explosion sword and sending him crashing into the ground. Asura, however, emerged unscathed and, noting his irritation at Haru, went on to assume his larger, Satanic-looking form while thereby revealing the myriad of Dark Brings embedded in his flesh. Proclaiming himself to be the "King of Magic Stones" holding every existing Dark Bring, he boasted that fighting him was tantamount to taking on every force of darkness imaginable. When questioned regarding his abduction of Elie, Asura explained Lucia's goal of using her to repopulate the "real" Earth once their fake parallel world was destroyed, to Haru's exasperation. Unfazed, Asura swallowed the Dark Bring containing the unconscious Elie whole and began engaging the Rave Master, employing a Dark Bring of his, Smoke Bar, to avoid his opponent's attack before mounting his own overwhelming assault via combo uses of his stones: first Balletteuse Flare and Armure D'Étoile, then Noah's Wind and Angry Blitz, and finally Stone Roses and Giant, the latter combination meant to petrify Haru but failing to do so. Asura was then shocked to discover Plue having sneakily destroyed the Stone Roses Dark Bring on his leg, angrily kicking the animal away and proceeding to try to obliterate it with Black Zenith. However, Haru stepped in to take the full brunt of the attack instead, shielding Plue with his body.[17]

Haru defeating Asura

Asura defeated by Haru.

Asura mocked the Rave Master for opting to suffer such grievous damage for the sake of a mere pet. He then went on with his relentless assault upon Haru, sending him flying into the air with an Earth-Attribute Dark Bring (likely G-Earth), shattering his healing Elixir, and utilizing more double-combo Dark Bring attacks: Angry Blitz plus Zero Stream, then Acid Rule plus Noah's Wind, Lightning plus Black Zenith, and finally Full Metal plus All Crush, the latter forcing Haru to the ground and, per Asura's word, pulverizing the boy's bones. As he declared his victory, Asura was then caught by surprise when Haru's sword suddenly exuded a bright light. The demon picked it up and, believing its light to stem from Rave, made an attempt to snap the sword in two, stomping on Haru's head as the boy tried to make him stop. However, no matter how hard the Demon King tried, he found himself incapable of breaking the weapon. After some time, the Rave Master managed to push himself back on his feet, crying out for the Demon King not to touch his sword. Asura was then shocked to see the weapon wresting itself from his grip and returning to the Rave Master's hand on its own accord. Once told that the sword's name was Ravelt, the dismayed Asura saw the Dark Brings across his arm cracking from his mere proximity to the sword before subsequently being struck down by a mighty swing from Haru (a so-called "stroke from the world itself") that shattered Asura to pieces, leaving the Demon King aghast at the notion of his body, one made of pure Dark Brings, being destroyed in such a manner. A dying Asura made frantic mention of how all he could see was blackness, before fading away into a dark, rising trail of smoke.[18]

Dark Brings & Abilities[]

Dead Bringers

The Dead Bringer army.

Asura held command over a vast army of golem soldiers[1] called Dead Bringers (魔石兵(デッド・ブリンガー) Deddo Buringā, lit. "Demon Stone Soldiers"): towering living statues built from the hardest stone in the Demon World and outfitted with armor, weapons (swords, lances, battle axes, etc.), and black wings permitting flight; endowed with superhuman strength, these knight-like golems could overwhelm most enemies (not to mention normal human soldiery) easily by swarming them in overwhelming numbers.[13][14][16] Still, these golems were but Asura's smallest asset: by many indications the most resourceful Demon King, he was an exceedingly powerful entity and, like his fellow three Demon Kings, held to be far stronger than former Demon King Doryu.[19]

Indeed, when first seen in action, Asura was able to outmatch all the Rave Warriors at once within a short space of time, giving them little chance to react to his rapid onslaught aboard their airship, destroying the latter in one attack, and causing their group to be scattered.[6] Later, the Demon King utterly dominated the Rave Master Haru Glory in a one-on-one fight, keeping the upper hand through most of it (with Haru left unable to get in a single solid hit) and ultimately losing only when pitted against his one great weakness: Rave.[17][18]

Asura flying

Asura flying at high speeds.

Flight: In his small form, Asura's movements on the ground appeared unfirm and clumsy, yet he was perfectly at ease when maneuvering through the air, being able to take off and fly at super speed; whether or not this was a product of some Dark Bring's ability is unknown. In flight, Asura could travel fast enough to leave a notable slipstream in his wake while breaking right through multiple crystal columns in his path without losing momentum, as well as breach the hull of the Rave Warriors' airship with the same ease by ramming into it.[20][21][22] In battle, Asura would jump up high to dodge enemy attacks on the ground and assume an aerial position better suited to aiming his own attacks without hindrance.[23]

Invulnerability: It seemed that Asura (being a "Living Dark Bring") was impervious to any damage not directly dealt by his polar opposite Rave (and by extension Ravelt, the tenth form of Haru's Ten Commandments sword wherein the Rave Stone was embedded): the Demon King remained completely unfazed when simultaneously struck by a Magic blast from Belnika and a sword strike from Shuda, a master swordsman wielding the allegedly godlike Heavenly Blossom blade, much to the Rave Warriors' dismay;[24] even the Ten Commandments itself proved ineffectual at hurting Asura in any form other than its final one: being struck head-on by Haru's Explosion and sent crashing down to the ground had no effect whatsoever on the Demon King, even leaving his clothes intact.[25] When ultimately cut apart by Haru using Ravelt, Asura's body shattered as if made of stone, without shedding a drop of blood or leaving entrails visible, thus revealing his nonorganic body composition.[26]

Asura's transformation

Asura in his transformed state.

Demon King Form: Asura had access to a secondary, Satanic-looking form that he could enter at will. Such transformation made his body gain drastically in height and mass, growing several times larger than his prior, diminutive self and tearing off most of his clothing in the process. The result was Asura becoming a towering, well-muscled, and slightly hunched humanoid who — apart from his limb-to-body proportions and purple skin — had little to share with his previous form. Asura's now thick, well-toned arms were still overlong, nearly reaching to the ground, and his elongated legs developed higher-set, more bent ankles to go with his hooves, thus resembling the legs of an unguligrade animal. Asura also grew a pair of slender, black-feathered wings from his upper back (resembling those borne by his Dead Bringer minions, though he was not seen flying with them) plus a long, arrow-tipped tail. Most of the Demon King's outfit was lost with the transformation, leaving only his black pants, now torn along the bottom hems, and the veil previously covering his lower face, now hanging below his chin like a bandana to reveal all of Asura's features: a squared jaw ending in a beard-like fringe (not unlike the fringes previously found on his clothes) and a mouth full of sharp, triangular teeth, flanked by strong nasolabial folds; the scales on Asura's face disappeared while his eyes, gaining prominently dark underlines, were now bereft of pupils. Yet another distinct change was the pair of giant, elongated, dark-purple horns that came out of Asura's forehead, jutting out near-horizontally, toward the sides, and then curving down near their tips. Yet more distinctive still, in this new form, were the myriad Dark Brings embedded in tight rows all over Asura's body, appearing as round, dark-purple gems that studded his chest, back, abdomen, arms and hands, legs, and even his tail[27] (something that made individual stones possible to target).[28] While in such state, Asura could store those he had entrapped via Enclaim inside his body, swallowing the Dark Bring containing them whole without causing them harm.[29]

Asura two Dark Bring use

Asura activating two Dark Brings at once.

  • Dark Bring Combination: Post-transformation, Asura was able to draw upon the abilities of at least two Dark Brings simultaneously, uniting their (usually offensive) powers to devastating effect, made visible through the selected pair of gems on Asura's body emitting light at once. When first showcasing this faculty, the Demon King was actually using three Dark Brings together, seeing how he had initiated a combo strike with Balletteuse Flare and Armure D'Étoile while still having assumed a smokey form via Smoke Bar. Combining Dark Brings in this manner bestowed great versatility onto Asura in terms of variegating his attack pattern, allowing him to boost his techniques' power, their chance to hit, or the speed at which they were executed.[30][31]
  • Enhanced Strength: Asura's size increase came with a boost to his physical strength, becoming able to crack a large section of the ground (made of stony crystal) when stomping on Haru[32] and momentarily bend Ravelt, a sword forged by a Silver Claimer of Musica's caliber to be nigh-on indestructible, with his bare hands (seemingly being prevented from snapping it in two by the power of Rave).[33]
Asura combining Dark Brings

Asura combining two Dark Brings, Lightning and Black Zenith, to assail Haru.

Dark Bring Physiology: As a "Living Dark Bring" (()きたDB(ダークブリング) Ikita Dākuburingu) suitably monikered King of Magic Stones,[2][3] Asura could harness the power of all existing Dark Brings (which were embedded in his body, save for the Mother Dark Brings),[3] thus putting his potential for offense, defense, and versatility during combat on a level unmatched by all other Dark Bring wielders.[34][30][31] Asura could selectively activate Dark Brings at any given time, exploiting their effects only when having use for them and negating some of their standard weaknesses in the process (for instance, the Demon King could invoke All Crush only when wishing to without passively shattering anything upon contact).[35] Indeed, Asura seemed to hold perfect control over his Dark Brings to the point of exerting only as much power as he desired, at times reflecting his sadism: his Black Zenith, rather than outright obliterating targets, merely dealt grievous (not instantly lethal) injuries to them,[36] and his All Crush only broke Haru's bones without seeming to cause external damage, let alone reducing the boy's entire body to pieces.[35] At the same time, Asura was able to use the likes of Balletteuse Flare, Zero Stream, and Angry Blitz to more damaging results than had been displayed by their original owners; usually, he would pair the effects of two offensive Dark Brings for devastating combo attacks performed in rapid succession, leaving no time for opponents to defend themselves, let alone counterattack.[30][31]

Enclaim (魔石精製の儀(エンクレイム) Enkureimu, lit. "Magic Stone Refining Ceremony"): Aside from owning all Dark Brings, Asura could utilize his so-called Enclaim ability to create an entirely new Dark Bring out of thin air, specifically manifesting one around a person to entrap them. Such confining process made a chosen victim shrink down dramatically, enough to fit inside a Dark Bring's standard marble-sized form, and to fall unconscious. Asura was shown casting Enclaim on Elie to abduct her: by pointing his finger at the girl, he made a long, flat, rectangular band resembling cloth (dark as a Dark Bring on the outside, light on the inside) manifest around her, rapidly reducing itself and thus the girl in size until being a small gem,[37] the now-sleeping Elie inside (and with Asura later proceeding to swallow the orb whole).[10] Once the Demon King had been defeated and the Dark Bring released from his body, it shattered, freeing Elie from captivity and reverting her to her original size. Her captivity had, however, put quite a strain on the girl; when waking up upon her liberation, she was quick to fall unconscious again moments after, something which Lucia mentioned was to be expected of one who had been trapped inside a Dark Bring.[38] Interestingly, this technique is named the same as the ritual that was once performed by King at the Tower of Din (which involved the artificial mass production of Dark Brings), suggesting that this technique of Asura's was essentially a smaller-scale version of said ritual.[39][40]

The following are the 16 Dark Brings of which Asura has shown use (in order of appearance):[34][30][31]

  • Giant (巨人(ジャイアント) Jaianto): A Dark Bring (originally owned by Franken Billy) that allowed Asura to gigantify his limbs. He was twice seen using it on his right arm, drastically enlarging (and thus strengthening) the limb: the first time to push Musica through a wall off the Rave Warriors' airship (his once-scrawny arm becoming a massive appendage with a larger-than-human hand)[41] and the second time when fighting Haru to powerfully punch his foe, simultaneously using Stone Roses to try to petrify him.[42]
  • Through the Wall (壁抜け(スルー・ザ・ウォール) Surū za Uōru): A Dark Bring (originally wielded by Gok) that allowed Asura to phase his body through solid matter (walls, floors, ceilings, etc.) without damaging whatever substance was affected, merely deforming it as if he were moving through liquid; usage of this Dark Bring proved conducive to executing surprise attacks.[43]
  • Balletteuse Flare (炎の舞(バレッテーゼフレア) Barettēzefurea, lit. "Dance of Flames"): A Six-Star Dark Bring of the Fire Attribute (once owned by Shuda) that allowed Asura, by raising his hand, to invoke fiery explosions anywhere he liked so long as he knew the spatial coordinates (this made visible by transparent, gridded, globe-like forcefields appearing along those coordinates, around the target while accompanied by beeping sounds resembling a bomb countdown).[44] Alternatively, Asura was shown employing this Dark Bring alongside Armure D'Étoile against Haru, producing a simple wave of flames alongside ice to engulf the Rave Master.[45] Balletteuse is a German word referring to a female ballet dancer.
  • Zero Stream (無の流動(ゼロストリーム) Zerosutorīmu, lit. "Flow of Nothingness"): Another Dark Bring of the Six-Star variety (once wielded by Deep Snow) that allowed Asura to control anything that "flows" (water, wind, even blood in his opponents' bodies). Somehow, he was seen using this power to effect an enormous explosion on the Rave Warriors' airship, destroying it and causing the wreckage to crash down.[46] Later, he invoked this Dark Bring alongside Angry Blitz to assail Haru.[47]
  • Gate (魔界門(ゲート) Gēto, lit. "Demon Realm Gate"): A high-level Dark Bring (formerly in possession of King) that allowed Asura to open dimensional gateways: upon use, the Demon King would have concentric ripples emanate from his hand, in the center of which a circular portal would then open up wherefrom Asura could summon a target of choice to his location. Asura was seen making use of this Dark Bring while in flight to call forth his fellow Demon King Uta, letting him plunge down with his massive sword to stop the Rave Master from pursuing him.[48]
  • Smoke Bar (煙酒場(スモークバー) Sumōkubā): A Dark Bring (once owned by Georco) whose ability, geared towards defense, was to physically become smoke, allowing Asura to temporarily become impervious to physical attacks and, in turn, letting him counter attempts made to strike him with subsequent Dark Bring attacks of his own (even using two additional stones) while maintaining his smoky form.[49]
  • Armure D'Étoile (星屑の氷(アマ・デトワール) Ama Detowāru, lit. "Stardust Ice"): A powerful Six-Star Dark Bring of the Ice Attribute (once employed by Julius Rayfield) that allowed Asura to instantaneously engulf enemies in ice, flash-freezing them; Asura was seen doing so to Haru, at the same time burning him with flames brought forth by Balletteuse Flare.[45] Armure D'Étoile means "Armor of Stars" in French.
  • Noah's Wind (方舟の風(ノアズ・ウインド) Noazu Uindo, lit. "Ark's Wind"): A Wind-Attribute Dark Bring (formerly owned by Lilith Nina) that allowed Asura to control wind, both for attack by generating strong gusts (seen when he utilized this Dark Bring alongside Angry Blitz to blast Haru)[50] and for support by bolstering his own movement speed via the force of (or by outright turning into) wind.[51] The Dark Bring's name is a reference to the biblical Noah and his giant ark.
  • Angry Blitz (怒の雷(アングリーブリッツ) Angurīburittsu, lit. "Angry Lightning"): A Lightning-Attribute Dark Bring (once in possession of Go Rockwell) that allowed Asura call down lightning bolts at will; he was seen pairing this power up with both Noah's Wind[50] and later Zero Stream to blast Haru with highly destructive combo attacks.[47] Blitz means "Lightning" in German.
  • Stone Roses (石の薔薇(ストーン・ローゼス) Sutōn Rōzesu): A Dark Bring allowing its wielder to turn people into stone upon contact (originally possessed Gawara), which Asura made use of against Haru, alongside Giant, to attempt to petrify the Rave Master with a gigantified punch, yet the Demon King failed to do so thanks to Plue destroying the Stone Roses gem on Asura's leg just in time to keep its power from taking effect.[42]
  • Black Zenith (漆黒弾(ブラックゼニス) Burakkuzenisu, lit. "Jet-Black Bullet"): A high-level, destructive Dark Bring (formerly held by King) with which Asura could conjure a dark sphere that rushed forth at the enemy, potentially wiping them (and anything else in its path) out of existence upon contact, tangible or not. Yet when deployed by Asura against Haru, hitting him straight-on, Black Zenith inflicted merely physical trauma on the boy instead of obliterating him (possibly due to Asura having meant to hit Plue and not exercised the Dark Bring's full power);[36] the second time that Black Zenith was seen in use by Asura, it was in tandem with Lightning (which let him vastly accelerate his movements) to deal extra-heavy damage in a superfast combo attack.[52]
  • Unnamed Earth-Attribute Dark Bring: A Dark Bring of the Earth Attribute (possibly G-Earth (ジ・アース Ji Āsu), which was originally wielded by Berial) that Asura was shown utilizing to abruptly raise the ground below Haru's feet, in the form of cylindrical rock pillars that shot up to send the Rave Master flying up into the air.[53]
  • Acid Rule (酸戒(アシッドルール) Ashiddorūru, lit. "Acid Commandment"): A Dark Bring (once in possession of Requin) that permitted Asura to ooze (and potentially even turn into) a super-corrosive acid that could melt down most organic or inorganic matter, thus dissuading enemies from directly striking him (lest they be burned) and dramatically raising the potency of his own physical attacks; the Demon King exhibited this Dark Bring's power alongside Noah's Wind (the latter increasing his attacking speed) to make a powerful rushing attack on Haru.[51]
  • Lightning (閃光(ライトニング) Raitoningu, lit. "Flash"): A high-level Dark Bring (formerly employed by Renard) that allowed Asura to move at lightspeed (though expectedly only in a straight line); when used alongside Black Zenith, it made for an overwhelming combo attack due to Asura's sheer speed of movement.[52]
  • Full Metal (鋼鉄(フルメタル) Furumetaru, lit. "Steel"): A Dark Bring (once owned by Shuda, then passed on to Feber) that allowed Asura to metalize his body, specifically converting it to steel. Thus, raising both his durability and striking power while active, this Dark Bring paired up well with All Crush when used by Asura to throw a powerful punch at Haru that shattered the Rave Master's bones upon contact.[35]
  • All Crush (粉砕の一撃(オールクラッシュ) Ōrukurasshu, lit. "Pulverizing/Crushing Blow"): A Dark Bring (once seen in the possession of Crush Cookie) that allowed Asura to pulverize anything that he came in contact with, whether living or nonliving, reducing it to pieces and hence yielding potential for a one-hit kill. However, when used by Asura on Haru (along with Full Metal), it merely crushed the boy's bones while otherwise leaving his body intact.[35]

Equipment[]

Litter: While able to rapidly cover long distances through flight, Asura preferred to be carried around inside a litter. It was a massive structure held up from below by four of his Dead Bringers acting as porters, with four thin pillars above the seating platform (sporting rounded, vertically striated sections near their top and bottom) that in turn upheld a thick, angular, sloping roof shaped like a pyramidal frustum (made of rectangular beams stacked atop one another, the bottom corners featuring hanging tassels like those on Asura's hat). Such roof was topped by a round protrusion that, itself, was thatched with straw reminiscent of a hut's roof. On the seat, a carpet was present for Asura to sit on.[1][54]

Battles[]

Triva[]

  • "Asuras" (Sanskrit: असुर) are a class of beings in Indic religions, cognate with the ancient Zoroastrian ahuras. Per Hindu (later Vedic and post-Vedic) scriptures, asuras are malevolent, power-hungry, and belligerent demons or demigods — oft portrayed as sinful and materialistic — which constantly war against the more benevolent, celestial "devas" (the gods, also called "suras"). Buddhist scriptures, likewise, regard asuras as enemies of the gods ("asura" being sometimes translated as titan, demigod, or antigod); the asuras also count as one of the six Buddhist realms of saṃsāra (reincarnation). Oft and characteristically (e.g., in Buddhist statuary), asuras are depicted with three faces and six (or four) arms.
